![]() The Transcend 25A3 is a variant of the StoreJet 25M3 we reviewed earlier this year, but unlike the 25M3, the 25A3 focuses on sleek elegance rather than military ruggedness. If you follow our reviews here at Custom PC Review or have went out shopping for a memory card lately, the Transcend name should sound very familiar. ![]() With all these factors in mind today we’ll be doing a review on the Transcend StoreJet 25A3 1TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive. ![]() With larger platter densities and lower manufacturing costs, hard-drives still win out in price to capacity – especially for those still hesitant in taking the financial leap toward SSD technology. Having survived the days of the dreadfully slow USB 2.0 standard with its crippling performance, USB 3.0 hard-drives are finally able to take full advantage of the spinning hard drive’s rated performance. However, let’s not forget about external, portable spinning hard-drives. We have a love affair with solid state drives here at Custom PC Review, and as SSDs have become higher capacity and more price competitive with traditional hard drives, we’ve started to see increasing demand for external SSDs, especially from those who’ve been exposed to the benefits of SSD technology in their main desktops or notebooks. We give it our B2G Recommend Award for its performance advantage but be ready to fork out for that premium.USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive for $81 Transcend backs the ESD400 portable SSD with a 3-year warranty. As it is, the Transcend ESD400 sits just below the Samsung T1 which is priced at $100 more so given the choices, this is a highly attractive offer. Again, portable SSDs aren’t for everyone and this is mostly intended for technical and creative professionals who need a high-speed solution for USB3.0 for various reasons other than just plain storage. That’s 3.3GB of small files and large files crammed in a hundred directories and the Transcend ESD400 portable SSD zoomed by them.įor many users, it all boils down to price and at $380 for 1TB that’s a cost many will not find easy to swallow. The Transcend ESD400 makes that possible by providing fast USB3.0 performance allowing your system to run like it was on an internal drive.Īt the end of the day, its transfer speed is still superior to disks as we can see in the shots above transferring 12GB in under a minute and our mixed file library in just 21 seconds. Other applications include portable systems for bootable environments where you need to move around data but don’t want to lose your native work area. As mentioned before, this serves a purpose far beyond storage and goes on to provide a fast storage solution for those looking to move data quicker between capable systems. Still, at an average of 300MB/s read and write performance, the Transcend ESD400 is a very fast drive. Its a bit disappointing that the Transcend ESD400 has reached this performance point even before we could run it. Still, given that we’re the only folks here that run degradation tests in our drives. We won’t hold this against Transcend as our sample is a used drive that has been passed around a couple of people for review. Trascend rates this drive at 410MB/s read performance so benchmarking with ATTO, we see that its a couple of MBs below its specification. The Transcend ESD400 isn’t too much on the tough side but its body shell does its job well but this isn’t something you’d want to be slammed around. The Transcend ESD400 isn’t the first drive to go this route as we’ve seen some before having the same direction in terms of physical size and having good build quality to protect the delicate flash chips inside. In the package, a velvet sleeve is included along with a thick USB3.0 cable. This makes it so much smaller than most portable 2.5″ hard drives and makes it easily pocketable. The Transcend ESD400 is a compact drive measuring around at no bigger than 3″ by 2″ with a thickness of just below half an inch. Transcend ESD400 1TB Portable USB3 SSD Review Connection bandwidth up to 5Gbits per second.SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 connection options.Free download of Transcend Elite data management software.Ultra-portable, about the size of a playing card.Boost your computer’s speed and capacity with a Transcend SSD.We have the 1TB model priced at a hefty $380 but offers up to 410MB/s throughput via USB3.0. In this review we’ll take a look at such a product with Transcend offering of their ESD400 Portable SSD. While portable storage is mostly a market for larger and larger storage, there is still a need for faster storage and with SSDs basically solving the challenges of mechanical disk solutions for this specific applications, portable SSDs have appeared offering faster performance in a compact form factor.
